Are the soft toys your
little one hugs truly safe?

As a mom, I wish someone told me what
was inside their soft toys.
Most parents never think twice,
until they look closer.
Learn What’s Inside
Baby hugging soft toy
MellowMoo
Here’s why that question matters.

Soft toys aren’t used from a distance

They’re pressed against faces.
Pulled into mouths.
Held during sleep.

Soft toys are some of the closest objects to a child’s body. Closer than clothes, blankets, or pillows.

Yet most parents have no idea what’s inside them.

MellowMoo

Babies explore with their mouths, not their hands

Before they can speak.
Before they understand danger.
Before they can stop themselves.

They mouth everything.

Especially the things that comfort them most.

Soft toys are often:
- bitten during teething
- sucked when tired
- chewed during stress
-held against lips and cheeks

Sometimes for hours every day.

Is Your Child Cuddling a Petroleum Product?

The global toy industry is the most plastic-intensive sector in the world. Most "soft" toys are actually bundles of synthetic fibers.

Not hard plastic.
Not visible plastic.

But synthetic fibres derived from petroleum.

Common materials include:
❌ polyester outer fabric
❌ microfibre or PP cotton filling

Chosen because they are inexpensive, easy to mass-produce and durable on shelves

Not because they were designed to be mouthed.

But what happens when these materials are used so closely every day?

MellowMoo

When a toy is chewed or sucked on, it becomes more than “just a toy”

Friction increases.
Compression increases.
Wear increases.

Over time, synthetic fibres can loosen through:
- repeated squeezing
- washing
- everyday use

Some fibres are microscopic, too small to see.

Small enough to become part of household dust.
Small enough to be accidentally swallowed.

MellowMoo

What We Still Don’t Fully Understand About Microplastics

Scientists are actively studying:
- how synthetic fibres break down over time
- how often microplastics are inhaled or ingested daily
- how developing bodies interact with these particles

There are still unknowns.

And when it comes to babies,
unknowns feel heavier.

Because infants are not just smaller adults.
Their systems are still developing.
Their tolerance levels are not the same.

MellowMoo

This isn’t about panic

It’s about proximity.

A soft toy isn’t used once a day. It is used during stress, during comfort, during teething, and during 10+ hours of sleep.

That is over 3,600 hours a year of direct, intimate contact with synthetic materials.

If we question the plastics in their bottles and the ingredients in their skincare, why is the object closest to a child’s mouth rarely questioned at all?

Not because it’s been proven ideal,
but because it’s familiar.

And familiarity can stop us from looking closer.

MellowMoo

Most toys are made this way for one reason

Plastic fibres are:
- cheaper
- easier to source
- easier to shape

Natural materials are harder.

They cost more.
They behave differently.
They slow production.

That’s why most manufacturers never choose them.

Not because better options don’t exist, but because better options are inconvenient and they choose bottom line over the nursery environment.

They prioritize industrial efficiency, leaving parents with "chemical sponges" that were never meant for a baby's mouth.

MellowMoo

That explanation wasn’t enough for me

At some point, this stopped being abstract for me.

I watched my child fall asleep hugging the same toy every night, pressed against their face, held through long hours of sleep.

And I realised this wasn’t a product used occasionally.

It was part of their daily environment.

MellowMoo

I Went Looking for a Better Option

So I started looking for an alternative.

Something made with more intention.
Something designed with closeness in mind.

What I found was how limited the options really were.

MellowMoo

What Manufacturers Quietly Told Me

When I spoke with manufacturers, many were honest.

Even after decades of making soft toys, some had never worked with organic cotton velour or natural kapok before.

These materials weren’t common, not because they were unsafe, but because they were difficult.

MellowMoo

The Real Reason Clean Toys Are So Rare

Natural fibres behave differently from synthetic ones.

They don’t hold rigid shapes.
They don’t move predictably.
They take more time to work with.

Production slows.
Costs increase.

Which explains why most brands don’t choose them.

MellowMoo

Why I Chose Not to Take the Easy Route

But when something is held this close,
difficulty didn’t feel like a reason to stop.

So I kept going.

Designed with care. Verified for safety.

These aren’t promises, they’re standards we chose and passed.

MellowMoo

What I Set Out to Create

I wanted a soft toy built from the inside out.

Not focused on trends.
Not optimised for speed.

But designed for how children actually use them. To hug, mouth, and sleep with.

MellowMoo

Designed From the Inside Out

That meant choosing organic cotton velour on the outside and natural kapok on the inside.

Plant-based materials that are breathable,
gentle to touch, and free from plastic-based filling.

Chosen deliberately, not as an afterthought.

MellowMoo

Safety Should Be Proven, Not Assumed

Once the design was finalised, the toy was independently tested.

MellowMoo is CE compliant and tested to EN 71 toy safety standards for use from birth (0+ months).

Because trust should be verified, not assumed.

MellowMoo

What This Approach Really Means

This approach takes more time.
It costs more to produce.
It limits how quickly things can scale.

But it also means every decision is made with restraint, not convenience.

MellowMoo

It’s About Making One Thoughtful Choice. For Our Little One.

This isn’t about fear.
And it isn’t about perfection.

It’s about awareness, and choosing more thoughtfully when we can.

Especially for the objects held closest.
